Transforming on demand platform work
Description
Globally, nearly 100 million people rely on on demand platforms – ride-hailing, food delivery and on demand delivery – for income, either by ferrying passengers or delivering food (and other items).
As platform work (or “gig work” in some places) grows in popularity, the question of how these workers should be classified is hotly debated across the world.
This report aims to provide stakeholders with an informed perspective on the complexities surrounding platform work and its evolving regulatory landscape.
The report features case studies from Spain, the United States, and China, showcasing the diverse approaches to the classification and regulation of gig workers.
The report also explores Singapore’s “Platform Worker Bill,” effective on 1 January 2025. The progressive five-year rollout is estimated to cost the industry US$368 million in additional social security payment (or CPF as it is known locally) alone.
A key question: who will bear this cost – platforms, consumers or merchants?
